SHILLONG: In a significant shift of protest tactics following widespread concern over recent violence, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) announced that its scheduled demonstration on August 21 will now be restricted exclusively to members of its Central Executive Council.
The decision aims to prevent outside agitators from embedding themselves in public crowds to incite further disturbances in the state capital.
The strategic change follows scenes of vandalism and disruption that marred a recent late-evening bike rally organized by the student body in Shillong.
Calling an emergency press conference to address the fallout, KSU General Secretary Rueben Anderson Najiar extended an unreserved public apology to citizens for the distress and inconvenience caused, accepting organizational responsibility while condemning the unlawful acts.
Addressing reporters, Najiar expressed profound shock over social media footage and news reports capturing the violence, clarifying that union leaders heading the procession remained unaware of any lawlessness until after the rally had concluded. Reaffirming that the KSU neither condones nor promotes violence, Najiar stressed that all preceding public meetings held across district headquarters and local venues in Shillong were entirely peaceful, organized with formal permissions from local Dorbars and district administrations in strict compliance with law-and-order guidelines.
According to Najiar, clear instructions were issued at the KSU headquarters prior to departure, directing all participants to maintain peace. While organizers had planned for a controlled turnout of 80 to 100 two-wheelers from local Shillong units, participation unexpectedly surged past 300 vehicles. Najiar suggested that anti-social elements and outside forces likely infiltrated the enlarged gathering to sabotage the student organization’s reputation and derail public attention from its core demands.
By restricting the upcoming August 21 agitation strictly to top leadership, the KSU seeks to maintain control over its demonstrations while keeping public focus anchored on its primary charter of demands, which includes citizen safety, job transparency, and expanded employment opportunities for local youth.
The union confirmed it will fully cooperate with law enforcement authorities and the district administration in their investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
