SHILLONG: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) President Raymond Kharjana has declared that imprisonment will only strengthen the organization’s resolve to fight for the community’s cause.

His remarks came after he and fellow KSU Central Executive Committee leaders—Vice President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, General Secretary Ruben Naijar, and Assistant Organizing Secretary Jeremiah Pohtmi—were produced before the District and Sessions Court following fresh legal charges related to the August 19 rally violence in Shillong.

Speaking to reporters outside the court on August 31, Kharjana described the state’s crackdown as a routine attempt to intimidate student leaders.

He reassured supporters that such legal actions serve to refine and harden their commitment, not deter it, and emphasized that the KSU’s leadership would not be weakened by arrests or pressure.

The union maintains that state action will only deepen their determination to pursue core socio-political demands for the indigenous community.
