SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Shillong Mihngi Circle has issued a strict one-week ultimatum to the Urban Affairs Department, demanding it direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office to demolish an illegally constructed place of worship within its official compound at Mawdiangdiang.
The decision follows a high-level meeting between KSU leaders and the Director of the Urban Affairs Department.
Briefing the media, KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle General Secretary Samuel Kharbani stated that the union had received formal clarification from the department, confirming that the land at Mawdiangdiang was strictly allotted for the CBI’s operational office and staff quarters.
In light of this confirmation, Kharbani stressed that the KSU is insisting the Urban Affairs Department order the central agency to dismantle the religious structure immediately, as its construction directly violates the original land allotment agreement.
“The Director requested time from us, stating that the department must follow due administrative procedures based on the points we raised. Consequently, we have given the Urban Affairs Department over a week’s deadline to take necessary action and instruct the CBI office to dismantle the illegally erected place of worship,” Kharbani said.

He warned that while the union will observe the period requested by the Director, it will not hesitate to launch democratic agitation if the state government fails to act.
“If the Urban Affairs Department is unable to take concrete action, we will launch agitations right outside the Urban Affairs office or at the CBI office premises in Mawdiangdiang,” he declared.
Kharbani also explained why the KSU chose to engage with the state department rather than the central agency, stating that previous attempts by union members to raise the issue with CBI officials were met with a dismissive and arrogant attitude.
“The fundamental question for the CBI is this: what precedent are they setting for Meghalaya when they themselves are carrying out illegal constructions within their own office campus at Mawdiangdiang?” Kharbani questioned.
