SHILLONG: Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Regional Committee for West Jaintia Hills, Sniawbhalang Dhar, has informed that the situation in Lapangap is currently calm. His statement comes after renewed unrest between the Karbi and Khasi Pnar communities in the border village, which tragically claimed the life of a Karbi resident.
Dhar explained that the incident occurred during paddy harvesting by local villagers—an unprecedented event in the area. Importantly, he clarified that this conflict is unrelated to the ongoing boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
“The Chief Ministers of both states have already discussed the matter, and the Regional Committees will soon decide on the necessary steps to resolve the issue,” he said. District authorities in Meghalaya have been instructed to coordinate closely with their Assam counterparts to maintain order.
“As of now, the situation is calm and under control, and we are confident that normalcy will return in the coming days,” he added.

Dhar also clarified that while certain areas along the Khanduli-Psiar border are disputed, this particular incident occurred in a region not under any boundary dispute. “The Regional Committees of the two states will decide on the ownership of this land,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister noted that paddy harvesting has been temporarily suspended but reassured that efforts are underway to resume work once discussions conclude. He emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored to prevent further escalation.
