SHILLONG: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma, has raised serious concerns over the security vulnerabilities along India’s Northeast international borders, warning that evolving geopolitical tensions pose significant risks to national stability.

Addressing the prevailing regional security scenario, Dr. Sangma stressed that challenges arising from India’s borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar must be viewed within a broader geopolitical framework rather than as isolated concerns.

He called for heightened preparedness and a coordinated security strategy amid shifting political developments in neighbouring countries and increasing global instability.

Highlighting what he described as a major security vulnerability, Dr. Sangma referred to sections of India’s borders in the Northeast as “porous,” noting that the terminology itself is acknowledged in official government records.

“These borders are porous. We must not assume that threats will only emerge through traditional routes such as the India–Pakistan border,” he cautioned.

“There are multiple frontiers and unconventional pathways through which destabilisation can occur.”

The Opposition leader emphasized that safeguarding national security requires sustained vigilance rather than periodic responses. He underscored the importance of seamless coordination between State governments and the Centre to effectively address cross-border challenges.

Drawing parallels with ongoing global conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, Dr. Sangma noted that modern security threats often arise through unexpected routes and asymmetric strategies.

Urging authorities to remain proactive, Dr. Sangma said security planning must be guided by both historical lessons and present geopolitical realities.

“When there are definitive threats to the nation, alertness cannot be occasional—it must be constant,” he stated, adding that cooperative federal action remains essential to protecting national integrity.
