Mawsynram NGOs to Stage Secretariat Protest Over Sai Computer Limited Power Deal

The agitation is being organized to protest against the Government's decision to hand over the power distribution of Mawsynram Sub-Division to Sai Computer Limited.

SHILLONG: Three social organizations—the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) of Mawsynram Block—have resolved to stage a massive protest in front of the Main Secretariat on June 12, 2026.

The agitation is being organized to voice strong public opposition against the State Government’s decision to hand over the power distribution and management of the Mawsynram Sub-Division to a private firm, Sai Computer Limited.

Speaking on the matter, the Chairman of the joint alliance, Tyngshain Ronsang, disclosed that following their initial opposition to privatization, the delegation had met with the Power Minister. However, the government has failed to provide a clear or satisfactory response regarding the issue till date.

Due to this official silence, the organizations held a special meeting and finalized their decision to protest at the Secretariat on June 12.

Tyngshain recalled their earlier statements to the media, where they warned that if the government failed to clarify its stance, the three organizations along with power consumers from Mawphlang Block, Mawsynram Block, and Ranikor Block would march directly to the Secretariat.

Citing the government’s total indifference and lack of an official response, the three groups have issued a joint appeal to all residents across these three blocks to come out in large numbers on June 12 to reject the private company. Local residents and pressure groups have voiced severe grievances over the company’s poor service delivery and the subsequent inflation of electricity bills in the region.

NPP Leaders step in

In a major development amidst the brewing protest, National People’s Party (NPP) leader H.M. Shangpliang announced that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has officially promised to terminate the contract of Sai Computer Limited across the Mawphlang, Mawsynram, and Ranikor areas. Shangpliang stated that the NPP has been closely monitoring the power distribution crisis managed by the company in the Mawsynram sub-division.

Elaborating further, Shangpliang said that following extensive follow-ups and a personal meeting with the Chief Minister, they formally demanded the immediate and permanent removal of Sai Computer Limited.

He revealed that their delegation met with the Chief Minister again last night to follow up on the matter, during which the Chief Minister agreed to completely terminate the company’s contract. Shangpliang added that the official termination process is currently moving through various government departments, and a formal order confirming the eviction of the company from the Mawsynram region will be issued within a few days.

Corroborating the Chief Minister’s assurance, the Member of District Council (MDC) from Mawsynram constituency, Alvin Sawkmie, appealed to the public to remain patient for a few more days while the paperwork is finalized, reiterating that the termination of Sai Computer Limited is certain.

He emphasized that the State Government acted swiftly after hearing the deep distress of the citizens and has committed to wrapping up the issue within days. Sawkmie expressed his gratitude and thanked the Chief Minister for taking the decisive step to remove the private firm from Mawsynram, Mawphlang, and Ranikor.

Despite these late assurances from political leaders, the official call for the public agitation in front of the Secretariat on June 12, 2026, by the HNYF, FKJGP, and HYC remains active as the organizations await the official written order from the government.
