MDA-II Reacts to Kharlukhi’s Backing of Pala

Shylla also addressed the persistent public demand for ILP in the state, reaffirming that the government's stance has been unwavering.

SHILLONG: In the wake of political developments surrounding former Rajya Sabha MP and veteran National People’s Party leader Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi extending support to Congress candidate and former Lok Sabha MP Vincent H. Pala, MDA-II spokesperson and senior government minister Wailadmiki Shylla has emphasized that Meghalaya’s unique electoral landscape often prioritizes individual candidates over party affiliations.

Addressing media persons regarding the high-profile political shift, Shylla acknowledged that Dr. Kharlukhi has been an immensely senior leader associated with the party since the foundational days of late P.A. Sangma, making the move come as a surprise.

However, he noted that it is premature to comment on whether it will create a direct electoral impact, adding that the party prefers to wait and watch how the dynamics unfold.

Shylla also addressed the persistent public demand for the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state, reaffirming that the government’s stance has been unwavering since day one.

He pointed out that delegations led by the Chief Minister have continuously engaged with the Union government on the matter, noting that based on state requests, the Centre recently included the newly elected Rajya Sabha member in the concerned central committee to further ongoing discussions.

Analyzing the voting patterns in the state, Shylla highlighted that Meghalaya elections operate on distinct equations where the electorate frequently draws a line between political parties and individual candidates, often supporting different choices across Parliamentary, Assembly, and District Council levels.

Because observations indicate that current backing is directed personally toward the candidate rather than the political platform itself, the government maintains that it is too early to draw conclusions and will continue to monitor the situation.
