SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma have agreed to work together to restore peace, trust and normalcy following the violence in Shillong on August 19 and the subsequent developments affecting people and commuters in both states.
Taking to X after speaking with the Assam Chief Minister, Sangma said designated Cabinet Ministers from Meghalaya and Assam would meet to take the discussions forward and explore ways to normalise the situation.
Appealing for calm, Sangma urged citizens of both states to maintain peace, harmony and restraint, stressing that Meghalaya and Assam share deep and longstanding bonds.
Sarma, meanwhile, said he had conveyed Assam’s concerns over the recent incidents in Shillong. Describing Meghalaya and Assam as “sister States”, he stressed that their deep historical, cultural and people-to-people ties must be guided by mutual respect, restraint and sensitivity.
The proposed meeting between the designated Cabinet Ministers of the two states is expected to explore measures to restore peace and normalcy while addressing concerns through dialogue and established democratic and constitutional mechanisms.
