SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Athletics Association has launched the Meghalaya State Senior Athletics Championship 2026 at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre at NEHU, Shillong.
A total of 267 athletes—166 men and 101 women—from all 12 districts are competing across 37 events, under the supervision of Athletics Federation of India (AFI) officials and Sportality coaches.
Inaugurating the championship, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Alertson Nongbri, encouraged athletes to give their best and embrace the true spirit of sportsmanship, noting that the event is a key platform for identifying talent to represent the state at the 2027 National Games in Meghalaya.

Nongbri highlighted the state government’s efforts to promote sports under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, including the Meghalaya Sports Policy, cash awards, scholarships, coaching, and a robust talent identification programme now entering its fourth phase.
He also emphasized the Super Elite Programme, which currently supports 11 athletes, and stressed the government’s commitment to nurturing sports careers and developing the state’s sporting ecosystem beyond the National Games.
Top performers from the championship will have a chance to represent Meghalaya at the National Games, as the state continues to focus on infrastructure, athlete development, and sustainable sports opportunities for its youth.
