SHILLONG: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Meghalaya, Dr. BDR Tiwari, has announced that the state election department is fully prepared to conduct a bye-election for the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency within six months of the demise of the sitting Member of Parliament.
He stated that the machinery is ready for the Lok Sabha poll and the official dates will be formally announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in due course.
Furthermore, the CEO indicated that the election for the Rajya Sabha seat is also expected to take place soon, with the department anticipating the process to be completed within the month of June this year.
The vacancy in the Shillong Parliamentary seat occurred following the sudden passing of the incumbent MP, Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), who passed away in February 2026.
Simultaneously, the Rajya Sabha seat is set to become vacant as the current MP, Dr. WR Kharlukhi, completes his official term in June.
Regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha bye-election, several prominent candidates have already emerged to contest the seat.
These include Dr. Batskhem Myrboh representing the Voice of the People Party (VPP), Dr. DRL Nonglait from the National People’s Party (NPP), and Vincent H. Pala, the former MP of the constituency.
In respect to the Rajya Sabha candidacy, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is reportedly engaged in high-level deliberations to finalize its nominee for the upcoming upper house election.
