SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has reiterated that his government remains open to dialogue on matters of public importance, in response to the high-profile rally organized by the Voice of the People Party (VPP).
The Chief Minister advised rally organizers to engage directly with the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, confirming that the state leadership has already briefed local administration officials on the situation.
Emphasizing the principles of democratic governance, Chief Minister Sangma pointed out that the Legislative Assembly is the primary and most appropriate forum for debating critical issues, especially with a legislative session approaching.
Nonetheless, he maintained that the state government upholds an open-door policy and is prepared to discuss any urgent public concerns.
Meanwhile, VPP President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit issued a statement clarifying the objectives behind the party’s planned peaceful march to the Secretariat on August 6, 2026.

Basaiawmoit underscored that Meghalaya faces a range of severe challenges causing widespread hardship for its residents.
According to Basaiawmoit, the demonstration aims to channel public grievance and opposition toward the current Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
He accused the administration of promoting anti-indigenous and anti-poor policies, marginalizing vulnerable populations, enabling systemic corruption, fostering communal divisions, and allowing environmental degradation under the guise of development.
Basaiawmoit urged responsible citizens across the state to participate in the Secretariat rally, declaring that the mobilization will send a strong ultimatum to the ruling coalition to halt actions detrimental to the welfare of the indigenous population.
