KSU Sting: Mukul Demands SP, DC Suspension Over Extortion

Dr. Sangma warned that illegal police checkposts and extortion inflate prices for everyday goods, placing the burden on the public.

SHILLONG: A sting operation by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has exposed alleged widespread police extortion on Meghalaya’s transport routes, prompting former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma to demand the immediate suspension of the concerned Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Commissioner (DC).

Dr. Sangma called for a full investigation under the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010, and the involvement of the Police Accountability Commission.

Dr. Sangma warned that illegal police checkposts and extortion inflate prices for everyday goods, placing the burden on the public.

He cited a 2010 executive order from his tenure that made district heads directly accountable for unchecked illegalities and called for its strict enforcement.

Highlighting the risk of political interference in policing, Dr. Sangma stressed that police integrity is vital for the justice system and urged the government to use Sections 107 and 108 of the Police Act to root out corruption, investigate potential high-level patronage, and restore public trust.

The revelations have reignited debate over law enforcement accountability and the role of political influence in police appointments and operations in Meghalaya.
