SHILLONG: Leaders and supporters of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) marched in force to the BJP office at Bivar Road. The massive protest was launched to condemn the NDA government’s move to introduce the G-RAM G Bill, a proposal that seeks to rename and restructure the iconic MGNREGA scheme.
The MPCC has labelled the move a direct assault on the legacy of the “Father of the Nation.” By removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the landmark Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Congress leaders claim the BJP is showing “utter disrespect and hatred” toward the values Gandhi stood for.
They argue that stripping Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the act is an attempt to rewrite India’s social welfare history.
A Blow to the Poor: Protesters alleged that the G-RAM G Bill is a calculated move to “strangle” the rights of the poor and rural laborers who depend on MGNREGA for their survival.
Leaders emphasized that this isn’t just a name change—it’s a “systematic attack” on a framework that has supported millions of households across Meghalaya and the rest of India.
”This is more than just politics; it is an insult to the poor and a blatant attempt to belittle the Kpa ka Ri (Father of the Nation),” voiced one MPCC leader during the demonstration.
The atmosphere was electric as Congress members converged on the BJP headquarters, shouting slogans against the NDA’s policies. The MPCC has made it clear: they view the G-RAM G Bill as a “war on the marginalized” and vowed to continue their agitation until the rights of rural workers are secured.
