SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Cycling Association (MCA) brought pride to the state after its cyclists delivered an outstanding performance at the National Mountain Bike Cycling Championships held in Arunachal Pradesh from February 12 to 15, 2026.
Leading the charge, Taitus Ch Marak emerged as the star performer by clinching the Gold Medal in the competition. Mali Vitrnda of Maharashtra secured the Silver Medal, while another Meghalaya cyclist, Meban Aiboklang Suiam, won the Bronze Medal, adding to the state’s medal tally.
In recognition of their achievements, the medal winners were accorded a warm reception on Tuesday at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU). MCA President Lening S Bareh, along with other association members, felicitated the cyclists for their exceptional performance.
Speaking to reporters, Gold medallist Taitus Ch Marak expressed joy over his victory, stating that although he had won medals in previous competitions, this was his first gold medal at a national championship. He shared that he trains independently and received support from a Delhi-based company, which enabled him to participate in the event. He also emphasized the need for continued hard work to meet international standards.
Bronze medallist Meban Aiboklang Suiam said he competed in the Men’s Elite category and has previously won several competitions, including a recent event in Mizoram. He added that he has represented Meghalaya in two international and five national championships. However, he highlighted the lack of adequate training facilities, noting that cyclists mostly practice in forest areas and prepare tracks on their own.
MCA President Lening S Bareh stated that many cyclists in the state train without professional coaching and that mountain biking is steadily gaining popularity. He informed that the association is working towards including mountain biking in the National Games of India, as several young athletes from Meghalaya have shown remarkable potential.
He further added that while the MCA regularly conducts training programmes for both men and women, financial assistance from the government is currently limited to preparations for the National Games.
