SHILLONG: Meghalaya is accelerating preparations to host the 39th National Games in March 2027, with 39 sporting disciplines proposed across venues in Shillong, Jowai, and Tura.
The state government, which signed the hosting agreement on May 30, 2026, recently welcomed a visit from the Indian Olympic Association’s Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC), chaired by Sunaina Kumari.
Kumari expressed satisfaction with the progress on infrastructure and venue development after inspecting sites in Shillong and Jowai.
She praised the coordination between government departments, sports officials, and stakeholders, and assured continued technical support from the committee.
The proposed list of disciplines includes archery, athletics, aquatics, football, boxing, hockey, weightlifting, wushu, and more, with the final lineup to be decided by the IOA in consultation with the GTCC.
Venues such as the J.N. Sports Complex, Shillong Golf Club, NEHU campus, and Umiam Lake are set to host events, with the opening ceremony likely at the J.N. Sports Complex.
The government has made significant investments in sports infrastructure, athlete development, and the newly inaugurated High Performance Sports Science Centre at J.N. Sports Complex.
Athletes are receiving enhanced support, including access to professional coaches and sports science resources.
Regular review meetings with the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) and efforts to address grassroots concerns underscore the state’s commitment to delivering a successful National Games in 2027.
