DELHI: Two young women from Barato, Meghalaya, were rescued in the national capital following a swift intervention by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) Delhi Unit and the Delhi Police, after they were allegedly lured to the city under the false pretext of hotel employment and pressured into prostitution.
The incident came to light on May 31, 2026, when the two distressed women contacted the KSU Delhi Unit seeking urgent assistance. According to the victims, they had been brought to Delhi by a woman who assured them that employment would be arranged for them in a hotel. However, upon their arrival, the situation took a dark turn as they were allegedly pressured to engage in prostitution.
The girls stated that when they firmly refused to comply, the woman demanded immediate reimbursement for the travel expenses she had incurred on their behalf. To ensure they could not escape or seek help, the woman confiscated their mobile phones and allegedly held them captive, declaring that they would not be allowed to leave until the money spent on their travel was fully repaid.
Upon receiving the frantic distress call, the KSU Delhi Unit immediately alerted the Delhi Police and sought their urgent intervention. Acting promptly on the information, the police tracked down the location, intervened in the matter, and detained the accused woman for questioning.
During the subsequent police inquiry, the woman denied all the allegations leveled against her. She maintained that the girls had travelled to Delhi entirely on their own volition in search of employment and claimed that she had merely paid for their travel expenses out of goodwill to assist them in securing jobs. She categorically denied any involvement in forcing or attempting to force the girls into flesh trade.
Following the police intervention, the woman was directed to immediately return the confiscated mobile phones to the two girls. Thereafter, the police safely handed over the victims to the care and custody of the KSU Delhi Unit.
At present, both women remain under the safe care and protection of the KSU Delhi Unit, which has made necessary arrangements for their safe return home to Meghalaya. The family members of one of the girls have already arranged and sent the required funds for her airfare, and she is scheduled to fly back to Meghalaya tomorrow.
In the wake of the incident, the KSU Delhi Unit reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare of students and youth from Meghalaya residing in or travelling outside the state.
The Union has also issued a strong advisory urging all job seekers to exercise extreme caution when accepting employment offers from unknown individuals and to thoroughly verify the authenticity of such opportunities before travelling.
