Meghalaya Govt Plans Unified Command Centre; Statewide Surveillance Expansion Announced

This decision was finalized during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government is set to completely transform its approach to state surveillance and inter-departmental coordination by establishing a brand new unified command structure.

This major administrative reform will introduce a dedicated director or chief executive officer to head the system, aiming to streamline operations across various government wings that utilize the Integrated Command and Control Centre.

In addition to this structural overhaul, the state plans to aggressively expand its smart surveillance network far beyond the capital city of Shillong, bringing advanced monitoring systems to multiple major towns across the region.

This decision was finalized during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday.

The session was prompted by the Chief Minister’s recent official visit to Hyderabad, where he closely studied the city’s highly advanced command-and-control systems. Sangma noted that he was deeply impressed by how Hyderabad successfully integrated drone technology, extensive surveillance cameras, and rapid emergency response systems into a single, cohesive network.

Reflecting on the current state of operations in Meghalaya, Sangma acknowledged that while departments such as Police, Information Technology, Urban Affairs, and Municipal bodies have been working together through the existing Integrated Command and Control Centre with helpful results, there is still substantial room for growth.

He emphasized that the primary objective of this new reform is to significantly improve the functioning of the center and make it far more productive. The introduction of a centralized director or chief executive officer was raised as a highly positive suggestion during the review, ensuring that a single authority can seamlessly coordinate efforts across these various distinct departments.

Looking ahead, the technological footprint of the project is slated for a massive geographical expansion. The government intends to roll out the network to key regional hubs including Jowai, Tura, Ri Bhoi, and Nongstoin.

This expansion builds on the proven success of the existing system in Shillong, where law enforcement officials have already reported that recorded footage from the network’s closed-circuit television cameras has been instrumental in resolving numerous criminal cases and maintaining public order.
