SHILLONG: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and Home (Police) Minister Prestone Tynsong has warned that unfenced stretches along the international border and the activities of local touts are driving a steady surge in illegal crossings from Bangladesh into the state.
Tynsong revealed that middlemen are exploiting porous frontier zones, especially in East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills, for personal gain.
The issue gained urgency after 27 Bangladeshi nationals were recently arrested in Assam, admitting to entering India through Meghalaya’s unguarded borders.

Tynsong emphasized that the majority of infiltrators are ordinary citizens fleeing unrest in Bangladesh, not posing direct law-and-order threats.
To address the persistent influx, Tynsong said the government has conducted high-level reviews with the Border Security Force (BSF), state police, and district officials.
Enhanced patrols and surveillance have been ordered, and coordinated efforts are underway to dismantle tout networks and further secure the state’s vulnerable border stretches.
