Meghalaya Honours Five Artisans with State Handicraft Artisans of the Year Award 2024–25

The awards were presented in recognition of the artisans’ contribution towards preserving and promoting our rich traditional handicrafts

SHILLONG: The Department of Commerce & Industries, Government of Meghalaya on Friday honoured five artisans from different districts of the state with the State Handicraft Artisans of the Year Award for 2024–25 during a ceremony held at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Commerce & Industries in Shillong.

The awards were presented in recognition of the artisans’ outstanding contribution towards preserving and promoting Meghalaya’s rich traditional handicrafts and indigenous craftsmanship.

The recipients of this year’s awards are Phras Syngkli of Umkaduh in Ri-Bhoi district, Gilford Pde of Chilliang Raij in West Jaintia Hills district, Mamsikha N Sangma of Balsri A’ding Chitoktak in West Garo Hills district, Ensila D Shira of Rongreng Chidekgre in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills district, and Wanstep Thangkhiew of Umsong in Ri-Bhoi district.

Each award carries a cash prize of ₹50,000 along with a trophy and certificate, recognising the artisans’ dedication to sustaining Meghalaya’s traditional craft heritage.

The awards were presented by Director of Commerce & Industries F. Sutnga in the presence of Joint Director M. L. Wanshnong and other senior officials from the department.

Addressing the gathering, Sutnga praised the artisans for their commitment and exceptional craftsmanship, stating that the awards acknowledge their efforts in safeguarding the indigenous crafts and cultural traditions of Meghalaya that have been passed down through generations.

He further announced that the department will extend additional financial assistance to the awardees, including seed money for the construction of working sheds-cum-store rooms and sales outlets, as well as support for tools, equipment, and working capital.

The department will also encourage the awardees to mentor and train emerging artisans, ensuring the continuity and growth of traditional craftsmanship across the state.

Sutnga also highlighted the upcoming Innovation & Research Centre (I&RC), which will support artisans in developing innovative craft designs with improved functionality while retaining traditional elements. The centre will be equipped with modern facilities such as 3D printers and specialized design software to help prototype new craft products.

He added that both present and past state awardees will be encouraged to contribute their knowledge and expertise to the centre, helping document and preserve the diverse indigenous crafts of Meghalaya.

Officials from the Meghalaya Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd (MHHDC Ltd), Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (MIDC Ltd), the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Government of India, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), and National Awardee Asuk Suting were also present at the programme.
