Education Scam: Meghalaya Govt Seeks Fresh Court Mandate to Review Cases of ‘Clean’ Teachers

The announcement offers renewed hope to many educators as the state awaits judicial clearance for the next course of action.

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma

SHILLONG: In a significant development concerning Meghalaya’s education scam, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, today, announced that the state government has moved the courts seeking permission for a fresh review of cases involving teachers allegedly caught up in the recruitment irregularities.

The Chief Minister said the move is aimed at providing relief to educators who may have been wrongly implicated and are seeking reinstatement after years of uncertainty.

Addressing the media, Sangma clarified that the government is proceeding strictly within the framework of judicial oversight. He noted that the reinstatement of around 140 teachers in the past was carried out in compliance with directives from the Supreme Court and the High Court, following detailed scrutiny.

“Whenever the judiciary has allowed us to review the matter, we have acted accordingly. In the first assessment, about 140 teachers were found not to be involved in any malpractice and were reinstated as per court orders,” he said.

The Chief Minister further informed that the matter is now being examined at the highest administrative level, with the Chief Secretary overseeing an assessment of the legal options available to the state.

Outlining the government’s position, Sangma emphasized that no unilateral decision can be taken due to the legal sensitivity of the issue. He confirmed that the state has approached both the High Court and the Supreme Court seeking a clear mandate to conduct a fresh review of the remaining cases.

Assuring justice for genuine candidates, Sangma said the government is prepared to reinstate teachers who are found innocent, provided the courts grant the necessary permission.

Despite the ongoing legal process, the Chief Minister sought to reassure the affected teachers, stating that the government remains engaged with their representatives. “They meet me regularly, and we are exploring all possible ways forward. I have already directed the Chief Secretary to examine the matter thoroughly. Any decision we take must stand on strong legal footing,” he added.

The announcement offers renewed hope to many educators as the state awaits judicial clearance for the next course of action.
