SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has launched a two-pronged diplomatic effort to restore peace along the Assam-Meghalaya border and address internal tensions.

It is reiterating its commitment to non-violence and readiness for dialogue with both the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and Assam authorities.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed ongoing high-level talks between the Chief Ministers and Home Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam to resolve the blockade at Jorabat.

The blockade began after Assam tourist drivers and the Bir Lachit Sena stopped Meghalaya-registered vehicles in retaliation for stone-pelting incidents during a recent KSU bike rally in Shillong.

Several Assam travelers were injured and vehicles damaged in the unrest. Protesters in Assam are demanding full financial compensation and medical expenses as conditions for resuming transport.

At the same time, the Meghalaya government has reiterated an open-door policy toward the KSU, appealing for calm and restraint across the state.

Deputy CM Dhar emphasized that while unlawful acts will not be tolerated, the government is prepared to address the union’s grievances through formal talks, which are expected to be scheduled after Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma return to the state.

Urging all youth and student groups to consider the wider impact of law-and-order disruptions, state officials stressed that peaceful dialogue remains the only constructive path to lasting solutions.
