SHILLONG: A young man tragically drowned at Umiam Lake near Jingkieng Kallong on Thursday, police reported.
According to authorities, Mawlai Police Station received information about the incident around 12:30 pm. A police team was immediately dispatched to the site, and the Special Rescue Team (SRT) of the Fire and Emergency Services, Shillong, was promptly alerted and launched a search operation.
The deceased was identified as Winifred Majaw, a resident of Lawsohtun, Shillong. Police stated that Majaw had visited the lake with a group of friends from his locality for an outing.
He reportedly drowned while swimming at approximately 10:20 am.
Following an intensive search, the SRT successfully recovered Majaw’s body from the lake. Preliminary police investigations found no evidence of foul play. After all necessary legal formalities were completed, the body was handed over to the deceased’s family.
