Nearly 3,000 Youth Join Meghalaya Police in State’s Largest Recruitment Ceremony

The induction of the new personnel is expected to strengthen law enforcement and emergency services across Meghalaya

GOERAGRE: In one of the largest recruitment drives in the state’s history, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday distributed appointment letters to 2,968 newly recruited personnel at a ceremony held at the Meghalaya Police 2nd MLP Battalion grounds in Goeragre.

The mass appointment marks a significant expansion of the state’s security forces and is considered one of the largest recruitment exercises conducted by the Meghalaya government.

According to official figures, over 1.7 lakh applications were received during the recruitment process, with the selected candidates emerging after a rigorous and competitive selection procedure.

The newly inducted personnel include — 1,494 Armed Branch Constables, 720 Unarmed Branch Constables, 205 MPRO Operators, 195 Firemen and several specialised posts including UBSI, Driver Firemen, Mechanics, and other technical roles.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the occasion as a moment of pride for the state, noting that the distribution of nearly 3,000 appointment letters in a single event could be the largest such exercise in Meghalaya’s history.

Sangma also reminded the recruits that wearing the uniform carries significant responsibility.

“When people see that uniform, they should feel respect, confidence and trust. The people you serve are your own brothers and sisters, and maintaining a balance between firmness and compassion will be one of your greatest responsibilities,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong also addressed the recruits, emphasising that the selection process was based purely on merit.

“You represent the hopes and aspirations of Meghalaya. You are here today because you are the best,” Tynsong said.

The government stated that the latest recruitment drive comes as the current administration approaches eight years in office, during which nearly 11,000 government appointments have been facilitated across departments.

The induction of the new personnel is expected to strengthen law enforcement and emergency services across Meghalaya, enhancing the state’s security infrastructure.
