SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has approached the High Court of Meghalaya challenging the appointment of Prof. Brinda Bazeley Kharbirymbai as part-time Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of North-Eastern Hill University.
Following a hearing on the writ petition on Wednesday, the court granted two weeks’ time to the respondents to file their reply. The matter is expected to be taken up again during the next hearing.
Speaking to the media, NEHUTA president Prof. Lakhon Kma alleged that the appointment did not adhere to established norms laid down by the Central Vigilance Commission and the Ministry of Education. He stated that, as per guidelines, a Chief Vigilance Officer must be selected from a panel of three candidates approved by the CVC, but claimed that no such panel was constituted in this instance.
Kma said the alleged deviation from procedure undermines transparency and compromises the independence of the vigilance mechanism. Terming the appointment “illegal,” the association has urged the court to set it aside.
