GUWAHATI: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, in Guwahati, Assam, to thoroughly discuss the ongoing ethnic violence between the Kuki and Naga communities in Manipur.
The crucial meeting was hosted and welcomed by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). During the deliberations, NESO expressed deep concern over the continuous cycle of atrocities, including physical assaults, killings, and the widespread intimidation of innocent civilians, which has left the entire region gripped by fear, anxiety, and a profound sense of insecurity.
Following detailed discussions, the student apex body adopted several firm resolutions.
NESO condemned any form of violence perpetrated against innocent civilians, including the tragic targeting of church leaders.
The organization expressed strong outrage over the attacks on religious missionaries who were actively working to broker peace, stating that such actions are completely unacceptable under any circumstances.
Furthermore, NESO issued a stern demand for the immediate and safe release of all individuals who have been abducted by various armed outfits, insisting that they must not be harmed or obstructed in any manner.
Turning its focus to the Central Government, NESO criticized New Delhi’s silence and apparent indifference toward restoring law and order. The student body claimed that the Centre’s failure to take proactive measures has allowed the conflict to escalate and turn more horrific, subsequently affecting neighboring northeastern states.
The organization demanded that the government initiate stringent steps to trace all missing persons whose whereabouts remain unknown since the outbreak of the violence, and to effectively contain the unrest.
NESO appealed to all warring factions and communities to come together, cooperate for peace, ensure justice prevails, and work toward rebuilding harmony in Manipur.
According to a press statement issued by NESO Chairman Samuel Jyrwa, the meeting concluded with a resolute commitment to stand united in the pursuit of peace and to safeguard the fundamental human rights of all affected individuals.
The emergency meeting saw high-level participation from student leaders representing various influential organizations across the Northeast, including the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) from Imphal, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) from Guwahati, All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) from Itanagar, Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) from Shillong, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) from Aizawl, Garo Students’ Union (GSU) from Tura, Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) from Kohima, and the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) from Agartala.
