SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere jointly laid the foundation stones for the permanent campuses of the National Law University (NLU), Meghalaya, and the Meghalaya State Judicial Academy (MSJA) at Mawpdang–Mawkhanu in New Shillong Township on Tuesday.
The ceremony, attended by Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, High Court judges, and academic leaders, marks a major transition from temporary premises to dedicated campuses.
The state government has allotted 65 acres for the two institutions, which will provide state-of-the-art facilities for legal education, research, judicial training, and professional interaction.
Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the complementary roles of the NLU and MSJA—preparing future legal professionals and providing continuous training for judicial officers.
He stressed the importance of research into customary and tribal laws, legal aid clinics, and collaboration between the two institutions.
Chief Justice Dere described the shared campus as a bridge between legal theory and judicial practice, emphasizing that the institutions’ success will be measured by the integrity and commitment to justice of their graduates.
She urged students to protect rights, serve vulnerable communities, and uphold democratic values.
The new campuses are expected to strengthen legal education, research, and justice delivery in Meghalaya, reaffirming the state’s commitment to building an educational and judicial hub.
