SHILLONG: Dr. DRL Nonglait, the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate for the upcoming MP election, has identified the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), and opposition to uranium mining as central issues for Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters about his campaign, Dr. Nonglait credited the Khasi Authors’ Society’s decade-long push for Khasi’s recognition, noting its current Associate Official Language status and the ongoing demand for full official status and inclusion in the Eighth Schedule.
He pledged to raise the matter with the Ministry of Home Affairs and build cross-party support in Parliament.
Dr. Nonglait described the ILP as a broad-based concern for Meghalaya, urging that its rules be tailored to the state’s unique needs.
He also reaffirmed the state Assembly’s resolution against uranium mining, calling for any national proposals to respect local sentiments and concerns.
He emphasized the need for stronger state–Centre coordination to boost education—especially technical and professional courses—and to enhance tourism, leveraging Meghalaya’s natural assets.
Dr. Nonglait said his campaign has covered nearly all 36 constituencies and expressed gratitude for the public’s support, which he said has strengthened his resolve to work for the people of Meghalaya.
