SHILLONG: Meghalaya’s legal system ground to a near halt on Tuesday as advocates statewide launched an indefinite boycott of court work, demanding the immediate removal of Advocate General Amit Kumar.
The strike, jointly led by the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association, signals a sharp escalation in tensions between the legal fraternity and the state government.
The decision to abstain from appearing before all courts and tribunals was finalized at an emergency joint executive committee meeting on August 31, following a unanimous general body resolution of all state bar associations on August 24.

Bar leaders said the boycott is a response to the government’s persistent refusal to engage with their concerns, and cited the Advocate General’s conduct as severely damaging to the dignity and welfare of the local Bar.
While vowing to continue the boycott until Amit Kumar is officially relieved of his duties, the associations have made an exception for bail matters to ensure that basic rights are protected during the protest.
The directive has been circulated to all regional bar units, with leaders calling for total solidarity among lawyers to maximize pressure on the government.
