SHILLONG: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum on Wednesday met East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, urging the police to impose stronger and more appropriate charges against the driver involved in the recent NEHU accident.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Nongrum said the incident was “extremely disturbing.” He informed that he had visited the two injured NEHU students in the hospital and expressed hope for their speedy recovery.
The MLA said media reports highlighting students’ demands for speed breakers near the accident site — along with their call for strict action against the driver — prompted him to intervene.
He also noted that the government has stepped in, with Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar visiting the victims and assuring that the state government will bear all medical expenses.
Nongrum said his primary concern was the police charging the driver under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to attempts to take a life. He argued that the section may not hold, as the accused could claim lack of intent. Instead, he suggested booking the driver under Section 125, which he believes is more appropriate.
According to the MLA, the SP assured him that the suggestion would be examined.
