SHILLONG: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has expressed his willingness to contribute ₹50 lakh from the Special Urban Works Programme (SUWP) out of his total ₹2.50 crore MLA scheme for the construction of the Meghalaya House in Vellore, also known as Spring of Hope Apartment.

Nongrum said that as the elected representative of North Shillong, he feels a strong sense of responsibility after personally witnessing several shortcomings at the Vellore guest house, which accommodates patients from Meghalaya who travel outside the state for medical treatment.

As a voluntary initiative, the MLA has offered ₹50 lakh from the SUWP to the State Government to facilitate the immediate start of construction and renovation works aimed at improving facilities for patients and their attendants from Meghalaya.

He further stated that he had raised the issue in the Assembly, seeking clarity on the future of the Meghalaya House in Vellore. In response, the government informed the House that there were plans to expand the existing facility by adding more rooms and that a decision had already been taken to construct a new guest house altogether.

However, Nongrum pointed out that despite these assurances, no visible progress has been made so far. He stressed the urgent need for swift and concrete action to ensure proper accommodation and support for patients and their families who are compelled to travel outside the state for advanced medical care.
