SHILLONG: In a significant political development, former Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Wanweiroy Kharlukhi has resigned from the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), ending his long association with the party.
In his resignation letter to NPP Meghalaya State President Prestone Tynsong, Dr. Kharlukhi requested immediate removal from the party’s primary membership rolls and expressed deep gratitude to the leadership and party workers for their support and camaraderie over the years.
Chief Minister and NPP National President Conrad K. Sangma acknowledged Dr. Kharlukhi’s decision, emphasizing that it was made at a personal level and assuring that the party respects his choice.
Recalling their decades-long collaboration, Sangma reflected on the late P. A. Sangma’s support for Dr. Kharlukhi and the collective efforts to advance Meghalaya’s interests.

He noted that while he did not anticipate the resignation, leadership changes are part of political life, and the NPP will continue its agenda as new members join its ranks. Sangma added that senior party leaders will meet soon to discuss future strategic steps.
Deputy Chief Minister and NPP leader Sniawbhalang Dhar, reacting to the news, suggested that Dr. Kharlukhi may have chosen to retire due to age.
He expressed gratitude for Dr. Kharlukhi’s years of service and acknowledged that while the party regrets losing such a senior leader, departures and arrivals are a normal part of politics.
Dhar assured that the NPP remains strong and will move forward, with further discussions among party leaders planned to chart the next course of action.
