SHILLONG: Panic spread across parts of Shillong early Friday morning after an unclaimed bag was found outside a shop near Laban Police Station, triggering a bomb scare.
Police, along with a dog squad, rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure. Movement in the vicinity was restricted while the suspicious bag was examined, creating tension among residents.
However, upon inspection, authorities confirmed that the bag contained only clothes and a set of keys, ruling out any explosive threat.
Secretary of Dorbar Shnong Laban, Raja Lyngdoh Nongpyiur, said the bag was first noticed by a local resident who had gone to dispose of garbage at around 7 am and promptly alerted the police. He added that although the bomb squad later verified the contents, the identity of the owner and the person who left the bag at the spot remain unknown.
Chayan Dey, the shop owner outside whose premises the bag was discovered, said the incident caused considerable alarm before authorities secured the area.
This is the second such incident reported in the locality within two days, raising concerns over public safety and recurring panic-triggering situations.
