PM Modi Praises Meghalaya’s Growth, Culture & Women Empowerment on Statehood Day

The PM praised Meghalaya for its breath-taking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and the distinct traditions of the tribal communities

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of Meghalaya’s Statehood Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his warm greetings to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and the people of the State, reaffirming the Centre’s continued commitment to the development of Meghalaya and the Northeast.

In his message, the Prime Minister praised Meghalaya for its breath-taking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and the distinct traditions of the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia communities. He highlighted the State’s deep respect for nature, spirit of harmony, and strong tradition of women empowerment, noting that these values significantly enrich India’s cultural fabric.

Recalling his visits to Meghalaya, including his visit to Shillong in 2016 for the North Eastern Council Plenary Meeting, the Prime Minister expressed admiration for the warmth and hospitality of the people. Reiterating that the Northeast is India’s Ashtalakshmi, he emphasised that India’s overall progress is intrinsically linked to the development of the region.

The Prime Minister also appreciated Meghalaya’s role during India’s G20 Presidency, particularly the successful hosting of international events such as the Think20 Conference and a conference on the space sector, which helped showcase the State on the global stage and boost domestic tourism.

Commending Meghalaya’s post-COVID economic performance, the Prime Minister noted the State’s impressive growth rate, prudent fiscal management, and sustained efforts in key sectors including housing, agriculture, healthcare, and education. He further acknowledged the positive impact of various Central Government schemes in improving infrastructure and livelihoods across the State.

Highlighting Meghalaya’s vibrant sports and cultural ecosystem, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the Centre’s support for strengthening sports infrastructure and nurturing talent, especially as the State prepares to host the upcoming National Games. He also appreciated Meghalaya’s growing global influence in music and the arts, assuring continued support to promote creative talent.

The Prime Minister also remembered Late P. A. Sangma on his 10th death anniversary, stating that his deep understanding of the Northeast, and Meghalaya in particular, continues to inspire the State’s development journey.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s message, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Meghalaya, thanking the Prime Minister for his warm wishes, guidance, and the steadfast support of the Government of India and Central Ministries in accelerating the State’s growth and development. He also appreciated the Prime Minister’s tribute to the late P. A. Sangma, whose ideals continue to guide Meghalaya’s progress.
