SHILLONG: A major water pipeline burst near the Joint area on Polo Road Thursday evening caused severe traffic jams and waterlogging in Shillong.
The incident, which occurred around 6:10 PM, sent a surge of water across the roadway, damaging two private vehicles and bringing traffic to a standstill from Polo to the Chief Minister’s Residence and connecting roads.
Sources said the Public Health Engineering (PHE) pipeline had experienced obstructions earlier in the day.
Despite inspections, workers could not resolve the issue before the pipe burst.
PHE staff quickly shut off the water supply after the rupture. The affected pipeline supplies water to the Mawpat areas.
This marks the second major pipeline burst in Shillong in recent weeks, following a similar incident near Golf Links road toward Lum Shyiap.
