SHILLONG: RTI activist Manbhalang Phankon has submitted a written request to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, urging the government to grant permission for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to conduct an independent probe into alleged illegal coal mining, transportation, and trading in the state.

Phankon also called for an investigation into the alleged use of illegally mined coal by coke and cement factories operating in Meghalaya.

He questioned the government’s claim that coal is sourced from Nagaland, arguing that the quantity required by local industries cannot be met solely through such imports and raised concerns about the true source of the coal.

The activist further sought clarity on who finances illegal coal mining operations, the bank accounts involved, and the ultimate destination of the proceeds from the alleged illegal coal trade.

Phankon emphasized the need for an independent investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
