SHILLONG: In a significant step towards addressing Shillong’s persistent traffic congestion, Cabinet Minister and MLA of the 19-South Shillong Constituency, Sanbor Shullai, inaugurated a newly constructed mini-bypass road located behind the N.E.F.A. Secretariat in the Cantonment Area.
The 0.185-kilometre stretch has been developed under the State Special Grant Assistance scheme at a total cost of ₹3.36 crore, aimed at improving traffic flow in one of the city’s most congested zones.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shullai described the project as a crucial intervention to ease vehicular pressure in the 19-South Shillong area. He stated that the new bypass is expected to reduce traffic congestion by an estimated 10 to 15 percent, offering tangible relief to daily commuters.
The Minister also highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project, noting that the land belongs to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. He credited the successful execution of the road to strong inter-state coordination, particularly acknowledging the support of Deputy Resident Commissioner Rani Dibang of the Arunachal Secretariat.
Shullai further expressed gratitude to Conrad K. Sangma for his leadership and vision, and Prestone Tynsong for overseeing the Public Works Department (Roads & Buildings). He also commended PWD officials for ensuring the timely completion of the project.
The newly inaugurated bypass is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and decongest traffic in the area, marking another step forward in Shillong’s ongoing urban infrastructure development.
