SHILLONG: Authorities in Shillong have heightened security measures across the city to prevent any possible spillover from the unrest currently affecting parts of West Garo Hills. The alert comes amid tensions in the border areas of Khasi and Garo Hills and the rapid spread of unverified information on social media.
According to police officials, surveillance has been intensified and patrolling increased in sensitive localities across the state capital. Law enforcement agencies are also working closely with traditional community institutions to maintain peace and stability. Despite the developments in other districts, authorities confirmed that the situation in Shillong remains calm and under control.
Superintendent of Police (City) Dewansh Pandey said the police are keeping a close watch on the evolving situation to ensure that law and order is maintained.
He stated that additional patrolling has been deployed in areas where heightened vigilance is required. The police are also maintaining regular communication with community stakeholders, including Village Defence Parties (VDPs) and local Dorbar Shnongs, whose cooperation has been crucial in maintaining peace.
Pandey further noted that authorities are actively monitoring social media platforms to curb the spread of misinformation that could trigger tension. He urged citizens to refrain from sharing unverified content and to rely on official information sources.
CoMSO calls for solidarity meeting
Security arrangements have also been strengthened ahead of a public gathering called by the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) at Motphran in Shillong.
The organisation has announced the meeting as a show of solidarity with the Achik (Garo) community, who have been protesting against what they describe as rising illegal immigration from Bangladesh.
According to CoMSO leaders, the issue of alleged infiltration threatens the state’s demographic balance, land rights, and constitutional safeguards meant for indigenous communities.
In a statement, the organisation said the gathering aims to demonstrate collective unity among indigenous groups in protecting their land, culture, and identity.
Adequate security arrangements in place
SP Dewansh Pandey assured that sufficient security measures have been put in place to ensure the meeting proceeds peacefully.
He added that the police have adequate manpower and resources to maintain law and order in Shillong and surrounding areas, and that authorities remain prepared to respond swiftly to any untoward incidents.
