SHILLONG: Shillong Polytechnic marked its Diamond Jubilee and the closing of its 60th anniversary celebrations at Mawlai Kyntonmassar, spotlighting the institution’s legacy in technical education.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, addressing the gathering, highlighted the polytechnic’s contribution of over 10,000 graduates who have served Meghalaya and the nation, and called for continuous curriculum updates and stronger industry linkages to keep pace with technological change.
Rymbui noted Meghalaya’s expansion in technical education, with four polytechnics currently operating and three more in the pipeline.
He advocated for partnerships with automobile companies, renewable energy agencies, and local industries to provide students with hands-on training.

The Minister emphasized that government support should extend beyond sanctioned posts to include funding for engaging faculty and industry experts.
MLA Mawlai Constituency Brightstarwell Marbaniang congratulated the institution, underscoring the role of its alumni in building the State’s infrastructure and calling for education focused on practical learning, industrial collaboration, and skill development.
The event featured the release of the commemorative publication “Diamond Jubilee Celebration: Shillong Polytechnic 1965-2026” and was attended by senior education officials and stakeholders.
Established in 1965, Shillong Polytechnic has served as a cornerstone for technical education in Meghalaya, with its alumni contributing across sectors and the State further expanding its technical infrastructure in recent years.
