Shillong–Pynursla–Dawki Highway Expansion Progresses Amid Challenging Terrain

Travelers are strongly advised to avoid using this route during the night, especially now that the onset of rain

SHILLONG, April 28: Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, announced that construction of the Shillong-Pynursla-Dawki road is currently in full swing. Work is progressing steadily across Packages 2, 4, and 5, which involve the expansion of the highway into two lanes.

The Deputy Chief Minister further revealed that work on Package 3 is slated to begin shortly. This particular segment is considered a critical phase of the project as it facilitates international connectivity between India and Bangladesh.

While the project holds immense strategic importance, the state government and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) are grappling with severe execution challenges. The difficult terrain—characterized by steep cliffs, mountains, rivers, and massive rock formations—has complicated construction efforts.

Tynsong explained that significant difficulties arise during blasting operations required to widen the road. The vibrations from these explosions often destabilize the soil, leading to landslides and falling boulders, similar to the recent unfortunate incidents reported at Mawlieh.

In light of these dangers, the government along with the District SDO has issued an advisory urging the public and commuters to remain highly vigilant. Travelers are strongly advised to avoid using this route during the night, especially now that the onset of rain and strong winds has increased the risk of major landslides.

Regarding a letter sent by the MDC of Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh to the Union Minister, Tynsong expressed his respect for the move and noted that the department frequently holds consultative meetings to find ways to mitigate such accidents. He added that the construction firm has been strictly instructed to complete the project within the coming year.

The Deputy Chief Minister also noted that while the debris at Mawlieh has been cleared, a fresh landslide has occurred below Laitlyngkot. He appealed to all commuters to exercise extreme caution during the monsoon season and confirmed that the SDO Civil has been directed to manage traffic flow from Pynursla to Shillong to ensure public safety.
