SHILLONG: Members of Shillong’s Tibetan diaspora intensified their resistance against Beijing’s ideological control with a solemn candlelight vigil at the Old Assembly Gate on Wednesday.
The peaceful gathering became a platform to challenge Chinese rule and condemn Beijing’s recently implemented “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress”—denounced by demonstrators as a genocidal framework aimed at systematically erasing Tibetan culture, identity, heritage, and language under the pretext of national integration.
The vigil was organized in memory of Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen, who died following a self-immolation protest outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on July 2, 2026.
The event drew exiled activists, community leaders, and local residents, and underscored the global dimensions of their struggle.
Community leaders called on international bodies and world governments to uphold the rule of law, demand independent media access to Tibet, and hold China accountable for human rights abuses across Tibet, Southern Mongolia, and East Turkestan.

Among the prominent participants were Shillong Tibetan Settlement Officer Tsering Dorjee, former MP Yangchen Dolkar, and Tsering Dolma.
In a powerful display of grief and defiance, several Tibetan men and women shaved their heads during the ceremony. The gathering issued a direct seven-point global appeal, urging the international community to honor the sacrifices of over 170 Tibetan self-immolators, formally recognize Tibet’s historical independence, and support its right to self-determination.
Addressing regional geopolitical challenges, organizers also called on the Indian government to take a firm stance against aggressive Chinese border transgressions, framing the security of the Indian border and Tibetan freedom as deeply interconnected issues.
