SHILLONG: The Shillong Municipal Board’s (SMB) deadline for hawkers operating in Laitumkhrah to relocate to designated sites at Dhankheti and the Brightwell Bungalow Compound took effect on Monday, August 17.
Early in the morning, SMB staff—supported by the Dorbar Shnong Laitumkhrah, the Seng Longkmie, municipal officials, and police—carried out a drive to remove and demolish temporary structures used by hawkers in the area. The operation proceeded without opposition, as hawkers present at the spot did not resist the removal.
Speaking to reporters, SMB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) P.K. Boro confirmed that arrangements had been made to accommodate the hawkers at the new sites in Dhankheti and the Brightwell Bungalow Compound near Barik Point. He noted that the hawkers had cooperated with the Board and complied with the relocation process.

Boro added that the SMB had issued a one-month notice to hawkers to vacate the Laitumkhrah area and shift to their allotted alternative locations, with August 17 marking the final deadline. According to the CEO, all hawkers from Laitumkhrah had accepted the relocation arrangement and were cooperating with authorities.
Efforts to obtain further comment from local MLA Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh yielded only a brief response: “Thank you. We have been waiting for this day.” She also expressed gratitude for the development.
The removal drive marks the successful implementation of the SMB’s relocation plan for hawkers in Laitumkhrah, paving the way for more organized vending and improved public spaces in the area.
