SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has assured the public that his government is carefully evaluating all aspects of the persistent flood crisis in the Jorabat belt and is actively developing multi-pronged strategies to resolve the issue permanently.
Addressing growing concerns over regional waterlogging, Chief Minister Sangma pointed out that recent highway construction has significantly worsened the problem. He explained that the altered civil infrastructure has created a severe structural drop, forming a bowl-like depression beneath the primary flyover where the ground level is several feet lower than the surrounding terrain.
This engineering flaw acts as a natural catchment basin, causing rapid water accumulation and flash flooding during heavy rains in the border zone.

Acknowledging the complexity of factors behind the recurring inundation, the Chief Minister reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to alleviating public hardship.
He emphasized that administrative bodies from both Meghalaya and neighboring Assam share equal concern, with their respective Deputy Commissioners maintaining continuous dialogue and coordination to manage on-ground disruptions.
Reaffirming that resolving the crisis is a top priority, Chief Minister Sangma stated that authorities are simultaneously deploying immediate emergency mitigation measures and formulating long-term civil engineering solutions to safeguard the region against future downpours.
