SHILLONG: The Dorbar Shnong of Mawryngkneng has strongly denounced the alleged excessive use of force by police during the protest staged by the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA), accusing the state government of trying to suppress the voices of the working class.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Mawryngkneng Sordar Peter J. Lawai said the police action had instilled fear and insecurity among residents, calling it “unacceptable and unjustified.” He cautioned that if such acts of aggression persist, the Dorbar would be compelled to take stronger action in protest against what he termed the government’s “dictatorial approach.”

Lawai further alleged that the authorities had sidelined and disrespected the Dorbar Shnong, undermining its traditional authority.

He urged the government to avoid the use of force and instead engage constructively with MCTODA to address their genuine concerns and restore peace and normalcy.

“This may be the final protest to remind the government that it cannot silence the voice of the people, especially those from the weaker sections,” Lawai said.

In a sharp remark, he added, “The Secretariat is just a skull and rubber stamp, while the brain lies in the cement factory.”
