SHILLONG: The State Minister and President of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Metbah Lyngdoh, has informed that the party has received and accepted the resignation letter of UDP Vice President Robertjune Kharjahrin, stating that the party respects his decision.
Speaking to media persons, Lyngdoh remarked that Kharjahrin’s resignation was entirely a personal decision, emphasizing that everyone possesses the freedom of thought according to their own principles. He added that as a party leader, he is always prepared to clarify any doubts or issues that the public might find unclear. However, regarding this specific matter, he noted that the party has simply accepted the resignation letter, which outlined the specific reasons that led Kharjahrin to take this step.
Clarifying the allegations regarding a potential rift or internal differences within the party, Lyngdoh strongly denied these claims, asserting that there is absolutely no division inside the party despite what others might be portraying.
Addressing the recent claims emerging from the UDP Shillong City unit, the party President stated that while everyone has the right to express their thoughts on the decisions taken by the party, there is an appropriate internal platform for discussions, consultations, and deliberations on all matters concerning the party’s functioning.
He further mentioned that a letter which had recently leaked to the public was strictly an internal family matter of the party, which they managed to resolve immediately. He shared that he personally went to meet the members of the Shillong City unit, and all internal issues have now been smoothly and completely settled.
It may be recalled that on June 3, 2026, UDP Vice President Robertjune Kharjahrin sent his resignation letter to the President and the General Secretary of the UDP Central Executive Committee (CEC), expressing that he took this decision due to a clash of ideologies and deep resentment over the party’s current functioning.
He specifically pointed out the recent decision made by UDP MLAs to support the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate, James Sangma, in the Rajya Sabha election. According to Kharjahrin, this decision was taken arbitrarily without obtaining the necessary approval from the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the UDP.
In his resignation letter, Kharjahrin questioned how the UDP could contest against the NPP in the ongoing crucial bye-election for the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency—promising voters a new and distinct political vision—while simultaneously helping the NPP candidate secure a seat in the Rajya Sabha.
Condemning this manner of functioning, Kharjahrin expressed that he could not remain silent on the issue.
He concluded his letter by thanking all party workers, supporters, and friends who accompanied him on his political journey, and vowed that he would continue to serve the people of Meghalaya and fight for issues that bring welfare to the entire state.
