Stretch of Shillong-Dawki Road Closed Following Deadly Landslide Near Mawlieh

The road will only be reopened once a detailed safety report is submitted and approved.

SHILLONG: The State Government, through the Office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner in charge of Pynursla Civil Sub-Division, has issued an urgent public notice announcing the total closure of the Shillong-Dawki road (NH260) near Mawlieh. This decision comes as a direct response to ongoing landslides and the continued threat of falling rocks, which pose a severe risk to commuters.

The closure follows a tragic landslide that occurred on April 20, 2026, at Chainage 35+450 km in the Mawlieh area. The incident claimed two lives and rendered the stretch extremely hazardous for vehicular movement.

While authorities have attempted to clear the debris along the highway, unfavorable weather conditions have caused further instability. Loosened rocks and soil from the surrounding cliffs continue to slide down, creating a life-threatening environment for travelers and risking damage to property.

To ensure public safety and prevent further casualties, the administration has prohibited all vehicular movement on NH260 between Laitlyngkot and Mawlieh, specifically covering the stretch from Chainage 22+00 to 35+450 km.

This total blockade will remain in effect until a thorough technical assessment is completed by government officials and the under-construction road is deemed structurally sound and safe for public use.

The road will only be reopened once a detailed safety report is submitted and approved.

Relevant departments have been directed to install barricades and warning signs at the affected sites. Police personnel and government staff will be stationed at key points to enforce the closure and inform the public. The Police Department, NHIDCL, contractors, and PWD (Roads) are tasked with the strict implementation of this order, and any violators will face legal action. Commuters are strongly advised to avoid this route entirely and utilize alternative roads until further notice. This measure is taken in the absolute interest of public security and welfare.
