SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is currently awaiting the report from its Special Committee before making a decision on whether or not to contest the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections scheduled for 2026.
This information was conveyed by the UDP President, Metbah Lyngdoh, who also informed reporters that the Party is preparing its own strategy for the upcoming GHADC elections.
Speaking to the media, Lyngdoh revealed that in the past months, the Party had constituted a Special Committee to closely examine the GHADC election scenario.
”We formed a Committee led by leaders from the Garo Hills region to assess the ground situation and determine whether it is feasible for the UDP to contest this upcoming GHADC election,” said Lyngdoh.
He added that it is still too early to discuss the GHADC elections as the dates for commencing the election process have not yet been finalized or announced. He stated that the party will wait for the Special Committee’s report before taking a final decision on the matter.
When questioned about alliances, the UDP President made it clear that there would be no collaboration with its partners in the current MDA government. “If we decide to step into the fray to contest the MDC election, we want to contest it alone,” he affirmed.
