SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has announced plans to develop a state-of-the-art transit hub at Umtyngar, aiming to revitalize tourism and ensure local taxi operators benefit directly from growing visitor numbers.
The initiative, finalized in a high-level meeting led by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, will see the Transport Department constructing the facility on land provided free of cost by the local dorbar shnong.
The upcoming transit hub will feature ample parking, a food court, waiting areas, and restrooms, transforming Umtyngar into a key tourist and transport landmark.
A special coordination committee—including representatives from tourist taxi associations, hotel and homestay owners, and tour guides—will mandate that local taxis are prioritized for visitor transportation.
Dhar noted that tourist arrivals are rebounding post-pandemic and stressed the need for collaborative, patient efforts for sustainable growth.
The government also announced enhanced safety measures, including 24/7 police surveillance along the Sohra tourist circuit and strategic CCTV installations at key spots and homestays to ensure visitor and local safety.
