SHILLONG: The governments of Assam and Meghalaya have agreed to work jointly to address concerns raised by tourist taxi associations and ensure smooth movement of tourist vehicles between the two states.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting in Shillong, chaired by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora, with the participation of officials and association representatives from both states.
Key issues discussed included the need for designated parking at airports and transport hubs, parking fees at Kamakhya railway station, police checking, and the alleged role of middlemen in inter-state taxi operations.
Both governments agreed to provide designated parking facilities for tourist taxis at key locations in each state and to address police-related concerns through improved coordination.

A joint mechanism, chaired by the Transport Commissioners of Assam and Meghalaya, will be established to periodically review and resolve operational issues.
A joint committee—including seven representatives from Assam and five from Meghalaya—will be formed to address ongoing concerns of the taxi associations.
Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the meeting’s outcome and highlighted the importance of dialogue in maintaining strong ties and peaceful relations between the states.
Assam’s Anirban, representing the Tourist Taxi Association, confirmed that parking issues at the airport and Kamakhya railway station are being resolved and that action against middlemen is expected within 10 to 15 days.
