SHILLONG: The East Jaintia Hills police, with the assistance of personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), successfully recovered the body of an unidentified man from a coal mine pit located in the East Jaintia Hills region.
The incident took place at a coal mine in Moolait Bri Sumer village, which had been abandoned and was completely inundated with water. The recovery operation was completed on Sunday afternoon at approximately 12:00 PM following a strenuous effort by the authorities.

The body was initially spotted floating in the water inside the abandoned pit on Saturday, but rescue teams faced significant challenges in retrieving it immediately due to the extreme depth of the water and the difficult, rugged terrain surrounding the mine site.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Pankaj Kumar Rasgania, confirmed that the body was eventually brought out through the joint efforts of the police and the SDRF team. He stated that all necessary legal formalities are being addressed and the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
At the time of filing this report, the police have not yet been able to establish the identity of the deceased or the specific circumstances that led to his death. Authorities have indicated that a detailed investigation will proceed further once the post-mortem report is available and all initial legal procedures have been concluded.
