Viral Video of Toddler on Mini-Bike Triggers Police Warning in Shillong

The Shillong Traffic Police made it clear that strict action will be taken against any such instances in the interest of public safety.

SHILLONG: The Shillong Traffic Police have issued a strong warning to parents after a video went viral showing a toddler, believed to be around 4 to 6 years old, riding a battery-powered mini-bike on a National Highway.

The incident has triggered concern among authorities, with the East Khasi Hills police terming it a serious threat to the child’s safety as well as to other road users.

Superintendent of Police (East Khasi Hills), Vivek Syiem, described the act as extremely dangerous and said it amounted to a violation of the law. He pointed out that children of such a young age have no understanding of traffic rules, signals, lane discipline, or the risks posed by moving vehicles on busy roads.

He further warned that battery-operated mini-bikes are small in size and can easily fall into the blind spots of larger vehicles such as trucks and SUVs, significantly increasing the risk of a fatal accident.

Police also reminded parents that the law provides for strict punishment in cases where minors are allowed to drive or ride vehicles on public roads. Under the amended provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, parents or guardians found responsible may face up to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000.

Stressing that public roads are not meant for recreational riding by children, the police said battery-operated bikes should only be used in safe and controlled spaces such as private residential compounds, designated parks, or supervised play areas.

The Shillong Traffic Police made it clear that strict action will be taken against any such instances in the interest of public safety.
